2003 FJM Clinics Scholarship Winners

On October 27, 2003 a committee of 5 business men and women met to determine the three winners of the FJM Higher Education Scholarship. The committee reviewed all the candidates’ essays and recommendations letters for one month. The committee proudly selected the following three individuals to represent Fred J. Miller Clinics and be the recipients of the 2004 FJM Clinics Higher Education Scholarship:

1. Natalie Clark from Huber Heights, Ohio.

Natalie Clark attended the clinic at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio June 15-18, 2003. Natalie was enrolled in the drum major curriculum.

The two most important skills that I acquired at the FJM Clinics were technique and motivation. It is important that I use my conducting technique every day. This shows the band that I know how to direct and it causes every person to blend and sound like one complete band. Also, my knowledge of marching technique and how to explain it helped me to teach it to the entire band. This would not have been achievable if I had not gained the knowledge of how to teach marching technique at the clinics. Secondly, I learned skills of motivation to raise the morale of the band. It is important to be encouraging, especially when specific people have a hard time or later in the season when everyone is less inspired and gives up. I learned how to detect signs of people giving up and how to deal with it, such as playing a group bonding game with everyone or reciting a cheer. Sometimes it is important to be motivational for minute reasons, such as when someone knows their music before it is required to be memorized. I learned not to criticize or demean anyone because that does not make anyone want to listen to me. It is important for me to be motivational so that our band can be motivated for our football team.

2.Robert Hulina from Addison, Illinois.

Robert Hulina attended the clinic at University of Wisconsin at Whitewater July 27-30, 2003. Robert was enrolled in the drum major curriculum.

I have attended the FJM clinic for the last two years, There are numerous skills that I have acquired, and I try to bring them back to my school’s performing groups. Attitude and teamwork are two skills that I believe will help our group achieve higher standards. If I can bring a more positive attitude out from a larger portion of our team, the positive attitude will spread and the entire group will benefit. If the officers, section leaders, and students in other leadership roles begin with a positive attitude and maintain it, the rest of our team will look up to them as role models and act in the same way. Success cannot be attained by one skill alone, but by many skills combined. Teamwork is another skill that can help improve our group. As the Band President and Senior Drum Major, I am fortunate to be able to add ideas to our program. With the help of other officers and our instructor, we were able to bring a few team motivating activities from the FJM Clinics to our program starting from the beginning of the year. For example, we have used the Trust Falling activity, and Team Tag. I also believe that in order to work as a team, we need to grow as a group outside of our music program as people. This year, I was able to put aside time for our entire group to socialize in a relaxed environment.Using a positive attitude, teamwork, and many other skills combined, our group will improve to be the best that we can possibly be.

3.Kelly Jo Zink from St. Mary’s, Ohio.

Kelly Jo Zink attended our clinic at Wright State University July 20-23, 2003. She attended the twirling/majorette curriculum.

I have already applied many FJM skills to my majorette squad. The most important skill I have applied to my squad is a positive attitude. As captain of our squad I have many responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is to oversee the squad during the band period at school. This job can be hard because we all have different ideas and all try very hard to get them across in any way possible. If I were to be negative, it would be easy for me to just tell them I am captain and I am making the decisions. However, this is not my responsibility as captain. But if I l keep my mind set on a positive attitude I can see the value of everyone’s ideas and take each one and make a compromise. This has proved to work very well with our squad. We are all getting along much better and are even having a lot of fun at practice. The improvements we have made as a team since returning from camp is tremendous. I have learned a lot about what it means to be a leader and I have applied it to my squad by setting goals and having a positive attitude. With this year’s winners, FJM will have given over $33,000 in scholarships to young people attending our camps. Each person that receives an Outstanding Achievement award at a FJM camp is eligible for the scholarship. We would like to thank each person that applied and encourage those who were not selected to continue their JOURNEY through life, FOCUS on their goals, BELIEVE in themselves, and as a result find SUCCESS in all that they do.
