On October 28, 2002 a committee of 5 business men and women met to determine the three
winners of the FJM Higher Education College Scholarship. The committee had all the candidates’ essays and recommendations letters for one month. Each committee member was
asked to come to the meeting with their top five people. The committee selected the
following three individuals to represent Fred J. Miller Clinics and be the recipients of
the 2002 Higher Education Scholarship:

1. Jenny Bess Cass - Franklin, Massachusetts.
JennyBess attended the clinic at Roger
Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. She was enrolled in the flag curriculum. She
attends Franklin High School in Franklin, Massachusetts. In her essay, she wrote:Throughout my stay at Roger Williams, I observed the countless accomplishments of my
peers. Be it mastering a difficult rifle toss or confidently conducting a challenging
song, I was stunned to see the amount of determination, concentration, enthusiasm and
camaraderie that existed among the clinic participants. The teamwork dynamic of the group
and the encouraging environment of the Clinic made my experience one that I will remember. |

2. Elise Jury - Houghton Lake, Michigan.
Elise attended the clinic at Northwood University
in Midland, Michigan. She was enrolled in the flag curriculum. She attends Houghton Lake
High School in Houghton Lake, Michigan. In her essay, she wrote:It was a 2002 Team Talk that I realized just how much skill and leadership I gained from
FJM. Attending the 2001 clinic and receiving an award boosted the level of intensity of my
performance and attitude in 2002. I was no longer afraid to tackle advanced routines, and
was proud of the leader and performer I had become. Once again, to my surprise I was
honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award. Receiving the award motivates me to always
do my best. Both trophies are proudly displayed on our family mantle. The first represents
the realization that no matter how difficult the challenge, I am capable of leading. The
second represents and celebrates the leadership qualities and skill levels that have
evolved because of my Fred J. Miller experiences |

3. Sharon Neufeldt- Tucson, AZ.
Sharon attended the clinic at the University of Tucson in
Tucson, Arizona. She was enrolled in the dance curriculum. She attends University High
School in Tucson, Arizona. In her essay, she wrote:At camp this year, one of the counselors told a touching story of when he was in high
school. He described how he always felt kind of left out and like a misfit. But, he said, there was one girl who always had a smile for him, and who always believed in him. He
concluded by reading a letter who wrote him; then saying that she is one of the reasons he
is who he is today. The surprise ending to his story was the name of the girl. She was
another one of the camp counselors. His story moved me to tears, as I was how simple acts of kindness can change someone’s life so dramatically. The counselors at the clinic told
me to believe in myself to succeed. I would like to take this one step farther this year. Besides having confidence in myself, I think the best thing I can do for my team right now is to help others to believe in themselves.

With this year’s winners, FJM will have given over $30,000 in scholarships to young people attending our camps. Each person that receives an Outstanding Achievement award at a FJM camp is eligible for the scholarship. We would like to thank each person that applied and encourage those who were not selected to continue their JOURNEY through life, FOCUS on their goals, BELIEVE in themselves, and as a result find SUCCESS in all that they do. |
